The EWFL was developed from scratch by a group of active Essex Walking Football Clubs from all corners of the County and was created with the help and expert guidance of Kevin Watts and the team at Essex County FA. The League was formed in November 2016.
The EWFL is a not-for-profit community-based organisation and is dependent upon donations from our clubs and other sources to be able to pay for our administrative expenses, tournaments and events. Our Officers and Committee members are volunteers and they give up their time freely.
The EWFL believes that Walking Football is a social and recreational sport. Our aims and objectives are:
From Season 2018 the EWFL created three Divisions ('Competitions'). An Over 65's Division, an Over 60's Division and an Over 50's Division.
All member clubs must be affiliated to their local FA and all players must be registered with the EWFL prior to playing. The current 'League Rules' and all other relevant forms can be found on our 'Our Documents' page.
From Season 2018 EWFL fixtures will be played on accredited centres (venues). Season 2019 starts on the 1st March 2019 and will finish on the 31st October 2019.
From Season 2019 but subject to an annual review - all teams wishing to join the EWFL will need to pay a £50.00 league membership fee.
The end product of all of the clubs’ efforts is a league with a solid foundation and structure.
The EWFL intentions are to provide competitive opportunities with no contact between its players. Good sportsmanship is expected from all involved: the players, coaches and spectators. In this regard the EWFL has a zero tolerance policy with regards to physical contact that can cause injury, dissent, abuse argumentative behaviour, swearing, and sarcasm towards match officials.
All matches will be played under the Essex Walking Football League rules. These are based on the FA's original LOTG template and our competition rules have been adjusted to ensure that physical contact is not made in order to win the ball or gain an advantage without taking the ball cleanly and thereby ensuring all game play is fair.
"We all should find something we love and enjoy doing – walking football is an excellent recreational sport and joining a team in the Essex Walking Football League may provide that opportunity to re-live some of those childhood memories (but don't forget the walking!)
